In 1901, the City of Walters was settled on East Cache Creek in Comanche County. The residents at this initial settlement called it McKnight, but it was soon discovered that the name had already been taken. As a result, the community named the town Walter instead.
In 1902, a flood forced most of the residents to relocate south to the area where Walters stands today. Cotton County was formed from the southern portion of Comanche County in 1912, and in 1917, Congress approved changing the town's name from Walter to Walters. (From the Oklahoma Historical Society)
